A Shining Example of Generosity

Suzan and Dr. John Shierholz honored with annual Greeley Award

Suzan (Suzy) and Dr. John Shierholz with their Greeley AwardFor decades, Suzan (Suzy) and Dr. John Shierholz have generously supported Mary Greeley Medical Center as donors and volunteers. Their extraordinary contributions were recently honored with the Foundation’s Greeley Award.

The award recognizes individuals whose dedication to philanthropy and service reflects the spirit of Captain Wallace Greeley, the hospital's founder. Since John began his radiology practice at McFarland Clinic in 1976, the Shierholzes have offered not only financial contributions but also their time, leadership, and commitment to ensuring Mary Greeley continues to provide exceptional care.

Suzy says that moving to Ames in 1976 was one of their most significant decisions. Over the years, the couple has supported the hospital with numerous gifts and leadership roles. From John’s work with the Israel Hospice House to Suzy's involvement in organizing auxiliary galas, their connection to Mary Greeley has deepened over time.

“The Auxiliary was the very first volunteer work I did when we moved here,” Suzy recalls. “Mary Greeley has been special to us for so many reasons, and we are humbled by the Greeley Award recognition.”

In addition to their hands-on involvement, they established an endowment with the Story County Community Foundation to ensure long-term support for the medical center, a contribution Suzy says is especially meaningful.

“For me, it was a way to give back to a community that has meant so much to us,” she explains.

Melissa McGarry, Mary Greeley Foundation Executive Director, commends the Shierholzes for their impact: “John and Suzy have been shining examples of generosity for decades, inspiring others through their continued commitment to giving. We are deeply grateful for their belief in our mission and their incredible generosity.”

Throughout their years of involvement, the Shierholzes are grateful for the relationships they've built and the chance to contribute to the hospital's continued excellence. Their legacy of giving—both as donors and volunteers—will benefit countless patients and families for years to come.

“We feel fortunate to have such high-quality healthcare in Ames,” Suzy says. “By giving back, we hope we've made a difference for the patients and families who rely on Mary Greeley for care.”
