New Monitors Help Nurses Manage Critical Newborn Care

Mary Greeley Medical Center has recently implemented state-of-the-art CareScape B450 monitors on its Birthways unit, a move that is advancing the care nurses provide to newborns in need of intensive care and their families. These monitors, made possible through a generous grant from Variety — the Children's Charity, are helping caregivers on the unit deliver more personalized care.

Tara Webber, RN, BSN, Birthways, says the monitors play a critical role in the delivery of care—especially for newborns needing intensive care services.

"The most important thing these monitors do is provide real-time information on all of our patients right to our devices wherever we are,” says Webber, who has been a nurse at Mary Greeley 1998, including serving babies in Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) since 2020. “That means we can deliver NICU level care in every single room on the unit, ensuring infants can remain with their parents, promoting bonding and enhancing family-centered care.”

One of the significant features of the CareScape B450 monitors is their ability to send alerts directly to caregivers' phones in case of any issues. This real-time notification system ensures prompt intervention and enhances patient safety.

"If there's any issue whatsoever, it sends an alert to our phones," Webber says. Moreover, caregivers can remotely view multiple monitors, allowing them to monitor infants' status from anywhere on the unit.

The implementation of these monitors marks a significant step forward in leveraging technology to provide better care.

"This model of care, of having the babies in the room with the parents throughout their stay and regardless of their condition, is the model of the future of NICU care," Webber says. “These monitors empower us as caregivers to provide comprehensive care without sacrificing quality or safety.”

The successful implementation of the CareScape B450 monitors underscores Mary Greeley's commitment to innovation and excellence in patient care. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and fostering a culture of continuous improvement, the medical center remains at the forefront of healthcare delivery.

“With these advanced monitors in place, we have the tools to provide unparalleled care to newborns and their families,” Webber says. “It is rewarding to work in an organization that invests in the type of technology that helps us deliver the kind of care that results in optimal outcomes and fosters a nurturing environment for all.”
