Mary Greeley Receives Magnet Recognition – Nursing's Highest Honor – For Second Consecutive Time
AMES, IA – Mary Greeley Medical Center has again received Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
The medical center received its first Magnet recognition in 2019. Magnet recognition is considered the gold standard for nursing and the highest honor given by the ANCC. Mary Greeley is one of four hospitals in Iowa to earn this recognition and the only hospital in central Iowa to have it.
Mary Greeley was also recognized for seven “exemplars,” or areas of clinical care that exceed Magnet’s national averages.
“We were incredibly honored when we received Magnet the first time,” said Amber Deardorff, vice president and chief nursing officer. “To receive the recognition a second consecutive time and to be recognized in seven areas of excellence shows the consistency of our nursing quality, as well as our commitment to continually improving our patient care.”
Magnet recognition comes after a rigorous application and review process, which includes a site visit by Magnet Recognition Program appraisers. With emphasis on quality, patient care practices, and performance outcomes, the Magnet Recognition Program measures how an organization involves nursing in leadership and decision-making and provides nursing staff with tools and training to drive continual improvement and innovation.
Research indicates that organizations that have received Magnet recognition have lower rates of negative patient outcomes, and higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help, and discharge information. Magnet-recognized organizations also have higher levels of job satisfaction and retention.
Mary Greeley employs approximately 650 nurses, more than half have earned their BSN. Studies have shown that organizations with high percentages of BSN-prepared RNs have better patient outcomes.
The Magnet Recognition Program was developed by the ANCC to recognize healthcare organizations that promote nursing excellence.
